Angola has joined the Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC) as the 192nd member. Angola deposited the instrument of accession to the Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC) with the Director General of the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW), Ambassador Ahmet Üzümcü, on September 16th 2015. The convention will come into force on October 16th 2015. 

“Angola's accession,” announced Ambassador Üzümcü, “following so closely that of Myanmar, brings the Convention ever closer to becoming a completely universal treaty.” 

The CWC came into force in 1997 and 4 countries (Egypt, Israel, North Korea and South Sudan) have not joined it yet. The CWC prohibits the development, production, stockpile and use of chemical weapons. The OPCW is the implementing body of the convention and started its work in the same year.
