Fourth Model UN Security Council Simulation at Tehran Peace Museum

un-simulation-news 2015The fourth UN Security Council simulation in cooperation with United Nations Information Center (UNIC) in Tehran and the International Studies Journal (ISJ) was held on 27 August 2015 at the Tehran Peace Museum.

In this one-day workshop attended by a number of law and international relations students and teachers from across the country, the crisis in Yemen was examined.

In opening the ceremony, Dr. Seyed Abbas Araghchi - the Deputy for Legal and International Affairs of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Iran – addressed the importance of this type of workshop by stating that one of the serious problems in foreign policy is a misunderstanding of many phenomena of international relations. Dr. Araghchi referred, in particular, to the issue of the United Nations and the Security Council.

“Many people assume that the Security Council is a court of justice,” said Dr. Araghchi, “and so expect decisions to be fair. This is a great mistake because the Security Council has an exact political entity and make political decisions according to the interests of the permanent member states.”

Gary Lewis, United Nations Resident Coordinator and UNDP Resident Representative, also addressed the participants during the opening ceremony. Mr. Lewis commended the participants for their hard work and commitment to this Model UN and declared that many law, governmental, business and world leaders were once students participating in MUNs worldwide, including Mr. Ban Ki Moon, the Current Secretary General of the United Nations.

Mr. Lewis also encouraged the participants to look beyond the self-interests of the countries they were representing and to consider the problems facing today’s world such as the human security difficulties brought about by climate change, migration, conflict and its consequences.

The chairman of this session was distinguished diplomat, Mr. Bagher Asadi, Iran's former Ambassador to the United Nations.
